Large neutral atoms, like argon or xenon gas, is ionized by a stream if electrons. The ions are directed at a column with neutral atoms of the same gas. The collisions cause the slow moving neutral atoms to act as fast moving atoms. This stream of fast moving atoms is then directed at the analyte.
