level questions: Volcanoes

QuestionAnswer
How do Volcanoes Form? They form when Magma reaches the surface, in which it erupts to make Lava. They are usually located along Constructive and Destructive Plate margins.
How can they affect different areas in different ways. One example could be a countries wealth. Poorer countries don't tend to have the resources to predict and prepare a volcano
What is the structure of a Volcano? At the top, you have the Crater which is where the Magma erupts from. The Main vent is the tunnel between the Crater and the Magma chamber, which is where the allot of magma is. Then you have a Secondary vent, which branches off the Main vent which could be used for if the Main vent is broken, or for some magma to escape faster
What do Volcanoes produce? They produce -Ash -Lava [Molten rock from the Mantle] -Volcanic bombs [Big chunks of hot rock thrown from the volcano] -Pyroclastic flow [a current of Hot gas and rock that goes downhill at a high paste] -Lahars [A volcanic landslide or mudflow with contains a mixture of Volcanic debris, Mud, Rock and Water
What are the good things about a Volcano?-Geothermal energy can be used, as magma generates heat equalling electricity. This also increases the renewables energy usage -Ash ejected can be used as a good fertiliser for soils -Tourism around Volcanoes can generate money
What are the bad things about Volcanoes?-Volcanoes kill and destroy -Economy can suffer harshly, as it can be hard to reboot as well, everything could be destroyed -Habitats and Landscapes are destroyed by lava flows
What is a Composite Volcano? This type is found on Destructive Plate Margins. They have -Acidic lava [quite sticky] -Steep sides [Lava doesn't flow far before solidifing -Alternate layers of ash and lava. -Violent eruptions -Longer periods between these eruptions
What is a Shield Volcano? This type is found on Construction plate margins. They have -Basic lava [runny and non acidic] -Gentle sides [Lava can flow for long distances] -No layers, just has lava -Less violent eruptions -Shorter periods of time between eruptions
Are their any named Exceptions?Mount Loa. Formed on a Destructive Plate margin, but is a Shield Volcano
How are Volcanoes monitored?-Seismometers. Earthquakes can trigger Volcanoes -Tiltmeters and GPS. Volcanoes tend to swell nearer its eruption -Overseeing Gases on a Volcano. Increase in Sulphur Dioxide means an eruption is nearer -Temperatures. Volcanoes become much hotter when magma rises in the Main Vent -Timeline. Patterns.
Why do people choose to live near an Volcano-They have accepted the risk and might feel protected against the Volcano -Volcanic rock and Ash makes fertile land equalling a higher crop yield -Tourism can make money -Geothermal energy makes cheaper electricity for locals -Minerals are in lava, so it can be mined for money
