level questions: Ways of Increasing Agriculture Yields

QuestionAnswer
What Elements do Plants need for Survival?-Nitrogen -Potassium -Phosphorus
What do Fertilisers Achieve?-They allow the Elements needed for Plant Growth [Nitrogen, Potassium and Phosphorous] to be more Abundant or simply be Replenished -This boosts the Crop Yield
What are the Disadvantages of Fertilisers?-They can Damage the Environment, as it Negatively Affects Ponds, Rivers and Lakes which is something Species live in / Rely on
What does Pest Control Achieve?-This helps to Kill Pests eating the Crops, meaning a Larger Yield can be Obtained
Describe and Evaluate Pesticides-This is simply a Form of Chemical Pest Control, where its just Sprayed onto the Crops, that will Kill any Pests that Damages it -They can be Poisonous to Humans, hence why its in a Short Amount -Pesticides can damage other Wildlife, as again its Toxic -Pesticides can also Travel up the Food Chain, which Kills the Organisms up in the Food Chain
Describe and Evaluate Biological Control-This is simply using Other Organisms to Limit the Number of Pests -This can be done from Adding new Species, or just Boosting the Population of Current Ones -Predators, Parasites and Disease-Causing are the Best Options -This has a Long Effect, and is Less Harmful but Introducing a New Species can lead to more Problems [Red Squirrels have made Population of Grey Squirrels plummet] -But Overall, its more Safer compared to Pesticides, as no Chemicals is Used, meaning Less Pollution and Risk for affecting Animals and Humans
What are Hydroponics?-This is where Plants are Grown, but without Soil [Instead its Nutrient Solutions -Said Plants can have their Roots being Dangling into the Solution, or be planted via a Growth Medium like Gravel, Coir or Perlite
Where would you use a Hydroponic for?-They can be seen for when its Hard to Grow that Crop using Soil that has Harsh Climates
What are the Disadvantages of using Hydroponics?-It needs a Lot of Fertilisers, meaning their Risks come into Play -It is very Expensive in terms of Setting Up and Maintaining -Diseases entering in can be Catastrophic for the Plants, as it will Spread Quickly
What are Genetically Modified Crops? [GM Crops]-GM Crops are simply Crops that has had their Genes modified through the use of Genetic Engineering
What can some of the Characteristics be in a GM Crop?-Insect-Resistant: In the Name really, this can Increase the Crop Yield as less is being Eaten / Infected. Also means Less Pesticides is Used -Virus-Resistant: Meaning that Diseases won't really Affect the Crops, so the Risk of Famine is Lower -Herbicide-Resistant: Farmers can just Dump it all over the Crop, and nothing will happen to it [Herbicides kill Weeds, but can affect Crops with no Resistance] -Adaptive to Extreme Weather: Allowing the Crops to be better Prepared can Increase the Crop Yield
