Anorexia Nervosa Bulimia Nervosa
Features of Anorexia Nervosa
Intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat even though underweight Body image distrubance Refusal to maintain weight at or above a minimally normal weight according to height and age Amenorrhea ( absence of at least 3 consecutive menstrual cycles )
Features of Bulimia Nervosa
Recurrent binge eating (excessive amount of food over 2 hrs, sense of lack of control) Inappropriate compensatory behaviour (vomiting, laxatives, excessive exercise) Twice a week for 3 months Self-evaluation unduly influenced by body shape/weight
What can cause ED?
Socio-cultural factors --> Dieiting, social media or parents Psychological factors --> Impulstivity, Self esteem , Anxiety , Depression, Perfectionism Genetic factors --> Serotonin and dopamine, females are more likely to get eating disorders
What are some treatments for EDs
Cognitive behavioral therapies Family treatment Medication --> mainly for BN Nutritional counselling and education
