level questions: Conservation of Momentum

QuestionAnswer
What is the law of conservation of momentum? This is the law that states that 'In a collusion where no other external forces act, momentum is conserved. This means the momentum after a coillison is the same before.
What happens if a red ball hits a yellow ball that is stationary? [Same mass]When the red ball hits the yellow ball, the red ball will stop while the yellow ball will move off. If there is no friction, the yellow ball will have the same velocity as the red ball.
Now what happens if Ball A had a mass of 0.08 kg which was moving towards Ball b at 9 m/s which had a mass off 360g. It was going the same direction as A at 3 m/s. After the collision, Ball A was stationary but Ball's B velocity was unknown. Find it out.First converge your units. 360g = 0.36 kg. Now we use the rule Total Momentum before = Total Momentum afterwards. To find out Total Momentum Before we do [0.08 x 9] + [0.36 x 3] = 1.8 kg m/s Use that equation and our Total Momentum afterwards is 1.8. Its not done yet Finding out Total Momentum After is: [0.08 x 0] + [0.36 x v²] = 0.36 x v² We rearrange the formula to look like Velocity = Momentum ----------------- Mass 1.8/0.36 = 5, which is the velocity
What happens if they collide and join together? It would of left the answer as Total Momentum after = [Mass a + Mass b] x Velocity
What are Elastic and Inelastic collisions? An elastic collision is when the total energy in the kinetic energy stores is conserved An inelastic collision is when the total energy in the kinetic energy stores is transferred to other stores. Eg Heating or Sound
