Progressive narrowing of spinal canal, lateral recess, and neural foramina. Affects the cauda equina It is diagnosed from spinal canal diameter of <12mm - 10mm definitely. Normal from 15-27mm
What is lumbar spinal stenosis?
LL symptoms Relieved by flxn worsened by extn Prolonged standing Walking over long periods.
Typical symptoms of lx spinal stenosis?
Present with stooped posture SLR will most often be -ve (not chemically sensitised - occuring over a long time). Claudication (ie standing) doesn't occur long enough to cause inflammation (relieved in lying/sitting) Hard neuro signs not common Neurogenic claudication - leg p) with walking +- paraesthesia, numbness, weakness (impaired venous drainage)
Objective signs?
SLR will most often be -ve (not chemically sensitised - occuring over a long time). Claudication (ie standing) doesn't occur long enough to cause inflammation (relieved in lying/sitting)
