QuestionAnswer
What is the working memory model?Explanation of how the STM is orgnaised and how it functions
What is the central executive? It controls the other subsytems, provides tools to process information. If there is a problem in the CE this can cause neurological disorders.
What is the capacity of the central executive?Limited, date arrives from senses but it can't be held for long
What does the central executive do with attention?Directs attention to task decides what the working memory pays attention to, its the boss of STM.
What is the Phonological loop?Holds speech based information. Articulatley control system, holds words seen or heard that you read with your inner ear. The capacity is limited The phonological store is where it holds the words that you hear
What is the episodic buffer?A general store. Subsystem deal with specific types of information, its an extra storage ssytem but still with limited capacptiy. Integrates information from all other areas.
What is the visual-spatial sketchpad?Visual or spatial information store here, the inner eye. Spatial means the relationship between things, spatial awarness. There is limited capacity. Inner scribe for spatial relations whihc sotores arrangment of objects. Logie (1995) suggested a subdevision called the Visual-Cache, Stores infroation about visual items eg form and colour.
Strength of WMM? (dual task)Badley found that in task1 when it only occupied the central executive was slower than task 2 which occupied the central exeutive and articulatory loop. Shows that task involing the same store is hard and supports WMM bc it shows that there are seperate components like it suggests
Strength of WMM (Futher resarch)Allowed for furthur research about memory due to it being well respected EG: coolidge ( found genetic orgins of working memory). Allowed for developing studies about the working memory and prompts more research.
Strength of WMM (research support)1970s KF motorcycle accident, brain damage in left occipital lobe. STM was damaged, digit span of 1 but LTM was normal. Remebers words better if presented visually rather than visually. Supports WMM bc it shows there are different sub-stores in STM, visual-spatial sketchpag is working but phonological loop is damaged.
Weakness of WMM? (proof)Some aspects of the WMM have yet to proven, lacks falsifiability seeing as it is more theorital contructs. There isn;t evidence to back up the claims, the CE has no evidence to support it, problematic seeing as there is a lack of internal validity. Hard to apply irl.
