Question:

Describe the Complete & Incomplete Combustion of Hydrocarbons

Author: Miqdaam Hamed Hassan

Answer:

COMPLETE: Good oxygen supply, release max amount of energy, produces carbon dioxide & water INCOMPLETE: Poor oxygen supply, release less energy, produces water, carbon monoxide/carbon or both. Problems: - Carbon monoxide: poisonous, binds w/ haemoglobin in red blood cell, prevents oxygen carried to cells in body. It's also colourless, has no smell ∴ hard to tell if your breathing it in, detected by electronic detectors (often fitted near boilers) - Particulate carbon: irritates lung's lining, makes asthma worse, can cause cancer, can cause global dimming, which may reduce rainfall
