Answer:

When birth starts, uterus begins to contract rhythmically. This is the beginning of labor. Contractions become stronger and more frequent. The opening of cervix gradually widens(dilates) sufficient to allow baby's head to pass through. The amniotic sac bursts and amniotic fluid is released breaking of the waters. Labor takes 4-12 hours on average.
