People was afraid for their lives because if he said what you were doing was antirevolutionary and got them to jail were if you were found guilty you would lose your head. The mayority were peasants ( ironic because the revolution was for them) He was the leader of the committee of public safety and the reign of terror started were a lot of people lost their head injustice
