Question:

Direct repair: Photolyase

Author: Alex Rapai

Answer:

This process repairs any UV-induced intrastrand pyrimidine dimer. The enzyme deoxyribopyrimidine photolyase binds specifically to pyrimidine (thymine) dimers in the dark. Photolyase contains two chromophores that absorb light energy in the range 300-600 nm. Absorbed energy is used to split cyclobutane structures.
