One of the ansamycin class of antibiotics semisynthetic as it is modified from the natural product rifamycin. Action is a RNA polymerase inhibitor, the only one in clinical use for blocking bacterial transcription. RNA pol has core tetramer of αββ’γ subunits. Rifampicin binds to β subunit at an allosteric site not the active site.
