Herzberg identified hygiene and motivating factors. Hygiene factors in themselves do not motivate and can lead to workers being dissatisfied if not present - they include pay, working conditions, and hours of work. Hygiene factors must however be meet for motivating factors to have an effect and these include taking on new challenges, new responsibilities e.g. promotion, job enrichment
