We can measure the heights of the Ocean surface with a satellite mounted altimeter. The radar emits short pulses of energy vertically downward and receives the reflected signal. A vital tool for documenting and predicting sealevel change. Sea-level change driven by two phenomena: Melting of glaciers and land ice sheets, Thermal expansion. SSH must be given relative to the reference geoid. hs = H – h
