Motion of dense, cooler, and usually nutrient-rich water towards the ocean surface, replacing the warmer, usually nutrient-depleted surface water. Nutrients + light = phytoplankton bloom. High primary productivity, rich in life. Upwelling areas are coastal (can be seasonal), equatorial and southern ocean.
