Question:

Friuli Isonzo (or Isonzo del Friuli) DOC

Author: Robert Quinn

Answer:

- Located in the Eastern Friuli sub-region of Friuli Venezia Giulia - Unique mesoclimate because of competing winds: the cold Bora from the Balkans and the warm breezes from the Adriatic - Two sub-zones based on soil: Rive Alte and Rive di Giare - Rive Alte - the northern (or right) bank is red gravel and clay; less fertile and subject to more cool air due to gap in the mountains (best vineyards); Friulano, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot - Rive di Giare - southern or left bank is white gravel, limestone and sandy laom; vineyards are lower, flatter and more fertile; wines lighter; Pinot Grigio, Malvasia Istriana, Refosco dal Penduncolo Rosso and Merlot - Most production is varietal wines
